# What is the Access Point Name (APN)? Is it also required for 5G, and why does it need to be set manually in the router (but not on the smartphone)?

The **Access Point Name (APN)** is the name of the access point that a cellular device uses to connect to a mobile network provider’s network.

Providers offer many different networks for IP communication, each with very different access options. This includes not only access to the Internet, but also, for example, connections limited to within the mobile network (closed user groups, such as CDA).

In INSYS icom routers, the APN is configured via a manual entry, rather than automatically or via an SMS sent by the provider that requires confirmation via eon, as is the case with many smartphones. Furthermore, while smartphones typically only require an Internet connection, INSYS icom routers are deployed in a wide variety of environments and networks, making it impossible to predict the correct APN for a specific application in advance.

As with previous mobile generations—2G, 3G, and 4G—APN entry is also required for the new 5G technology. Some providers use their own APN for 5G service.

We recommend contacting the SIM card provider to inquire about the appropriate APN for your application. For SIM cards obtained through INSYS icom, use the APN **m2m.tele2.com**; for SIM cards with a 5G plan, use **iot.tele2.com**.
