  • PDF

Article summary

In order for a router to act as a participant in the VPN network, it must first be configured for this purpose.

The icom Connectivity Suite - VPN is a service of INSYS icom for the simple and secure network connection of locations, plants, control centers and mobile devices via a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

Check your device!

This Configuration Guide only applies to routers of INSYS icom running under the icom OS operating system. These include the router series MRX, MRO, ECR, SCR as well as MIRO and MIROdul (plus possible later series).

Situation

You have added an INSYS router in the icom Connectivity Suite – VPN and want to configure it as participant in the VPN network now.

Solution

The following Configuration Guide shows how to configure an INSYS router with icom OS for the icom Connectivity Suite – VPN. There are two options for configuring the router depending on its initial condition:

  • A router that is in default settings and has no Internet connection yet should be commissioned for the icom Connectivity Suite – VPN using the startup wizard.

  • A router that is already configured and has Internet connection should be configured for the icom Connectivity Suite – VPN manually.

Configuration via startup wizard

It is prerequisite that the device is already added to the icom Connectivity Suite – VPN. Refer to this Configuration Guide to find out how to add the device.

  1. Commission the router as described in the Quick Installation Guide.

  2. Start the startup wizard in the Wizards menu and configure system time, authentication and Internet connection accordingly.

  3. Select icom Connectivity Suite as VPN connection and enter Customer name and Device code.

    Where to find this?

The Customer name is specified on the My VPN Hub tab in the icom Connectivity Suite. If no special Device code has been specified when adding the device, the default code is also specified on the My VPN Hub tab.

  4. Configure the further options of the wizard accordingly and complete it with SUBMIT or Execute wizard.

The router will connect to the icom Connectivity Suite – VPN now and retrieve its VPN configuration for this.

Manual configuration

It is prerequisite that the router has Internet connection and is already added to the icom Connectivity Suite – VPN. Refer to this Configuration Guide to find out how to add the device.

  1. Open the portal of the icom Connectivity Suite:

  2. Select the Devices tab.

  3. Go to the row of the router to be configured and click on Download () in the Manage column.

  4. Click on INSYS Router Configuration and save the configuration file on your computer.

    Please note!

This is a regular ASCII configuration file for updating the profile of the router with the necessary settings.

  5. Open the user interface: https://insys.icom

  6. Click in the AdministrationProfiles menu in the ASCII configurations section on and upload the previously downloaded ASCII configuration file.

  7. Click on to apply an ASCII configuration file that has been uploaded.

  8. Click on ACTIVATE PROFILE .

    Please note!

All settings are stored in profiles. Only to activate a profile causes that the router takes on and executes the settings.

The profile updated with the ASCII configuration file will be activated and router will connect to the icom Connectivity Suite – VPN now.

Please note!

However, this does not yet ensure a secure configuration for the icom Connectivity Suite - VPN since this depends on the router settings that have already been made. If more than one WAN chain or a VPN tunnel have already been configured for example, this may cause conflicts with the configuration file. A further manual editing of the configuration is necessary then.

Troubleshooting

  • You can verify a successful connection when the state changes to online on the Devices tab of the icom Connectivity Suite. Please note that this may take up to a few minutes.

  • If it does not get online, check the following:

    • Condition of the cellular connection under view dashboard outline Status →  Dashboard (for an LTE router)

    • Condition of the OpenVPN connection under view dashboard outline StatusDashboard

    • OpenVPN Log in the view dashboard outline StatusLogs menu

  • Refer to the icom Connectivity Suite manual for more information.
