Adding an INSYS Router With icom OS - icom Connectivity Suite - VPN

To set up a VPN network, the participants must first be created.

The icom Connectivity Suite - VPN is a service of INSYS icom for the simple and secure network connection of locations, plants, control centers and mobile devices via a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

The “devices” of the participants are differentiated between INSYS icom routers with icom OS, with INSYS OS and other third-party devices. These can be PCs, controls, cameras, other routers, etc. that support OpenVPN and are referred to as PC in summary in the icom Connectivity Suite - VPN.

Check your device!

This Configuration Guide only applies to routers of INSYS icom running under the icom OS operating system. These include the router series MRX, MRO, ECR, SCR as well as MIRO and MIROdul (plus possible later series).

Situation

You need to add an INSYS router with icom OS as a participant in the icom Connectivity Suite – VPN.

Solution

It is prerequisite that you have Internet access. It is prerequisite that you have an account for the icom Connectivity Suite. Refer to this Configuration Guide to find out how to register an account.

  1. Open the portal of the icom Connectivity Suite:

  2. Click in the Devices menu on ADD DEVICE and select INSYS Router (icom OS).

  3. Enter the following information:

    • Device Serial: enter the serial number of the device printed on the label on the device or indicated in the user interface in the Status → Dashboard menu.

    • Device Name: enter a name that allows to distinguish the device clearly from other devices.

    • Licence: select the licence to be used.

    • Location: [if your account is configured for China VPN,] specify here, whether the router is in the rest of world or in China.

    • Default monitoring: check this if the availability of the device is to be monitored (refer to Monitoring Devices in the icom Connectivity Suite - VPN for more information).

    • Device Code: the device code is used for configuring the  router using the startup wizard.

      Please note!

      This code will also be used as password for accessing the router via a web proxy.
      If no device code is specified here, the default code will be used. This can be configured in the classic user interface on the My VPN Hub tab. See also this note.

  4. Click on NEXT.

  5. Assign the device to a Group that combines devices with similar functions that share common communication rules.

    Groups can be added in the classic user interface on the Groups tab. If no groups are entered yet, only the standard group is available. See also this note.

  6. Enter the accessible IP address together with the Netmask over which the device is supposed to be accessible in the VPN network.

    Please note!

    The Netmask determines the size of the network that is made known around the local IP address via routing. It can be entered in long form (255.255.255.0) or CIDR format (/24). If a netmask that differs from the standard (255.255.255.0) is entered, the DHCP server in the device will be disabled.

  7. Select the IP Net of the router to which the device is to be assigned (only for icom OS devices if more than one IP net is available).

  8. Consider whther you want to use Netmapping. Than, activate the Netmapping checkbox and enter the Router/LAN IP to which the netmapping is supposed to take place and which the router has in the local network. If Netmapping is not checked, there will be no netmapping and the router will be configured to the previously specified Accessible IP.

  9. Optionally, click on the   ADD NEW NETWORK button to add another network of this router to the VPN network.

    1. Proceed as described for the first network to add this additional router network to the VPN network.

    2. Assign this additional router network to a port on the router.

  10. Now check the assignments of the networks to the ports and adjust them if necessary by selecting the options Manually assign networks to ports or Do not configure networks or ports.

  11. Click on CREATE to add the router to the icom Connectivity Suite.

  12. Commission your device using the Startup wizard as described in the Quick Installation Guide, select icom Connectivity Suite as VPN connection and enter your Customer name and Device code.

Troubleshooting

  • You can verify a successful connection when the Status of the device in the device list in the Devices menu of the icom Connectivity Suite - VPN changes to Online.

How to access the router?

The user interface of the router can be accessed as follows:

  • Local: the PC from which access is made must be in the local network of the router

  • Remote: the PC from which access is made must be in the VPN network of the icom Connectivity Suite - VPN (Configuration Guide).
