Connecting an INSYS Router With INSYS OS - icom Connectivity Suite - VPN

In order for a router to act as a participant in the VPN network, it must first be configured for this purpose.

The icom Connectivity Suite - VPN is a service of INSYS icom for the simple and secure network connection of locations, plants, control centers and mobile devices via a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

Check your device!

This Configuration Guide only applies to INSYS Smart Devices running INSYS OS. These include the router series MoRoS, IMON, EBW, RSM and QLM.

Situation

You have added an INSYS router in the icom Connectivity Suite – VPN and want to configure it as participant in the VPN network now.

Solution

The following Configuration Guide shows how to configure an INSYS router with INSYS OS for the icom Connectivity Suite – VPN. There are two options for configuring the router depending on its initial condition:

  • A router that is in default settings and has no Internet connection yet should be commissioned for the icom Connectivity Suite – VPN using the startup wizard.

  • A router that is already configured and has Internet connection should be configured for the icom Connectivity Suite – VPN manually.

Configuration via startup wizard

It is prerequisite that the device is already added to the icom Connectivity Suite – VPN. Refer to this Configuration Guide to find out how to add the device.

It is also necessary to reset a router to default settings before commissioning it for the icom Connectivity Suite – VPN using the quick start wizard. Instructions for this can be found in the Quick Installation Guide and the user manual of the router. The quick start wizard is only displayed during the first startup of the router in the web interface.

  1. Set up the router as described until you reach step D.

  2. Configure Internet access as described, select icom Connectivity Suite – VPN and enter your Customer name and Device code in the icom Connectivity Suite – VPN section.

    Where to find this?

The Customer name is specified in the classic user interface on the My VPN Hub tab in the icom Connectivity Suite. If no special Device code has been specified when adding the device, the default code is used that is also specified in the classic user interface on the My VPN Hub tab. See also this note.

  3. Click on OK.

The router will connect to the icom Connectivity Suite – VPN now and retrieve its VPN configuration for this.

Please note!

The router is already addressed via the new IP address, if such has been entered under Accessible local IP address when registering the device in the icom Connectivity Suite – VPN (refer to this Configuration Guide).

Manual configuration

It is prerequisite that the router has Internet connection and is already added to the icom Connectivity Suite – VPN. Refer to this Configuration Guide to find out how to add the device.

It is prerequisite that the router has a firmware version 2.4.0 or later.

  1. Open the portal of the icom Connectivity Suite:

  2. Select on the Devices page in the device list the device to be configured, by selecting it from the dropdown-list Devices or clicking in the ID column on it.

  3. Click on the device details page on   DOWNLOAD CONFIGURATION and save the configuration file on your computer.

    Please note!

This is a regular ASCII configuration file for updating the profile of the router with the necessary settings.

  4. Open the web interface of the router:

  5. Select in the SystemUpdate menu the previously downloaded configuration file in the Manual update section and click on OK.

    Please note!

However, this does not yet ensure a secure configuration for the icom Connectivity Suite - VPN since this depends on the router settings that have already been made. If it has been configured as VPN server before for example, this may cause conflicts with the configuration file. A further manual editing of the configuration is necessary then. Refer to the router manual for further information about this. Click the question mark () in the header of the web interface to show the inline help.

Troubleshooting

  • You ccan verify a successful connection when the Status of the device in the device list in the Devices menu of the icom Connectivity Suite - VPN changes to Online. Please note that this may take up to a few minutes.

  • If it does not get online, check the following:

    • Cellular connection status on the Home screen (in case of a cellular router)

    • Connection status on the Home screen

    • OpenVPN log in the SystemSystem data menu

How to access the router?

The user interface of the router can be accessed as follows:

  • Local: the PC from which access is made must be in the local network of the router

  • Remote: the PC from which access is made must be in the VPN network of the icom Connectivity Suite - VPN (Configuration Guide).
